The relationships that drive the story
At its core, Firefly Wedding is a triangle that is not really a triangle: Satoko's bargain binds her to Shinpei, whose love and violence are the same instinct; Kōtarō, her loyal retainer, pulls her back toward duty and family; and Mitsueda sits behind them all, the broker whose contract set everything in motion. Satoko's father, Jūbee, and the suitor Mitsuharu Okumura later prove more entangled in her fate than she first realises.
Spoiler-sensitive readers should note that the characters' full arcs run through the completed manga; individual character pages flag spoilers in their own sections.
