Firefly Wedding

The Firefly Wedding manga

The anime's source: a completed historical romance by Oreco Tachibana, serialized on Ura Sunday (web) & MangaONE app from 2023-01-01 and finished in 2026.

What it's about

In the Meiji era, Satoko Kirigaya — an earl's daughter with a failing heart — is abducted by the assassin Shinpei Gotō. Her desperate proposal of marriage turns a contract killing into a consuming, dangerous love story that carries the pair from a noble house to the red-light island of Tennyo.

The manga ran on Shogakukan's Ura Sunday site and the MangaONE app, collected into tankōbon volumes and published in English by Viz Media (print) · Comikey (digital). It sits at roughly 79 chapters and twelve main volumes, plus a special «SS» volume — see the volumes and chapters page for the full release timeline.

Arcs, in short

  • The abduction and the bargain — the meeting that starts everything.
  • Tennyo Island — Satoko posing as a courtesan, and the slow turn from deal to feeling.
  • Family and duty — the return of Kōtarō, and the truth about who arranged the kidnapping.
  • The wedding, the separation, and the decades that follow.

How it ends

The main story closes on a bittersweet note that split readers. After Satoko and Shinpei are separated and a private wedding on Tennyo Island, her illness worsens until she falls unconscious. Shinpei believes she has died and leaves — then spends decades wandering Japan rather than visiting a grave he assumes is hers.

Full ending — major spoilers

Only in the final chapters does an elderly Shinpei return to Tennyo Island, where Kōtarō Ogawa finally hands him a letter Satoko left for him. It reveals she survived: a physician brought from overseas by her former suitor Mitsuharu Okumura had treated her, and she waited, alone, for decades. The series ends with the two reunited in old age.

Spoilers for the completed manga. The anime covers the story across its 12-episode first season.

Should you read or watch first?

Either works. The anime adapts a finished story, so reading ahead will spoil the show — but watching first is safe and gives the manga's later, more detailed chapters room to land. Most viewers start with the anime while it airs and pick up the volumes once the season ends.
