The assassin
Shinpei Gotō
後藤 進平 · Gotō Shinpei
A man who loves as intensely as he kills.
A hired killer born on Tennyo Island, Shinpei is sent to murder Satoko and instead accepts her proposal of marriage — becoming hopelessly, dangerously devoted to her.
Shinpei arrives in the story as a weapon: Mitsueda hires him to dispose of the abducted Satoko, and he is good at it. But when Satoko turns the situation around and offers him marriage in exchange for her life, he takes the offer, and something shifts. The affection that follows is genuine, overwhelming, and impossible to separate from his instinct to possess and protect.
He is the manga's great contradiction — described as "full of love," and also violent, jealous, and unpredictable. To Satoko he is both the most dangerous person she has ever met and the only one who has ever looked at her as more than a bargaining chip.
His devotion curdles into the tragedy at the heart of the ending: believing he has lost her, Shinpei wanders Japan for decades rather than face a grave he thinks is hers.
