Protagonist
Satoko Kirigaya
桐ケ谷 紗都子 · Kirigaya Satoko
An earl's daughter who bargains with her own killer.
The heroine of Firefly Wedding: a celebrated beauty of the Meiji era whose heart has been failing since childhood, and who is determined to marry well for her family before her time runs out.
Satoko is the only daughter of the Kirigaya house, raised in comfort yet shadowed by a congenital heart condition that has convinced her she will not live long. She is famously beautiful — likened in her town to a goddess — and equally famously composed, but the poise hides a quiet self-loathing: she has troubled her family with her illness and once drafted a note offering her body to medical science.
That tension is the engine of the story. Satoko sets out to secure a marriage that will repay her family, only to be abducted on the road. Cornered, she does the one thing no one expects — she proposes to the assassin sent to kill her. "Marry me, and we'll have it all." The bargain is not sincere. What grows from it is.
Across the manga she is spirited from the world of nobles to Tennyo Island, a red-light district where she poses as a courtesan, and forced to weigh duty against a love that threatens to consume her. Underneath the fragility she is sharp, stubborn, and far more willing to fight for her own life than she admits.
